Myths About Health And Body

Mythbusters

In this series MythBusters, I will be telling about different myths related to different things/people/ ideas etc.

It is the first part in which I will discuss myths about health and body.

Myth #1: "Starving yourself" can be effective for weight loss.

According to research, it is found that if you are reducing 50% of your body energy requirement by starving yourself for 3 weeks then surely it will help in reducing weight but also reduce your lean muscle weight by 5% and if it is maintained then it can decrease up to 20%

Starvation leads to loss of lean body mass and lean muscle mass which encompasses bones, water and organs. Which can be lethal as decrease bone density can make you more prone to diseases.

Also according to research, it is found that the people who lose weight by starvation gained it back within 8 years.

Conclusion/Fact - weight loss is based upon calories intake and calories burnt. Decrease amount of calories for a particular time would not be effective, one should focus on calories burnt.

Myth #2: If you exercise, you can eat whatever you want.

Many people think that if they are working out then they can eat whatever they want and can easily lose weight but it is not true because:

1) As mentioned above weight loss is all about calories in vs calories burnt. For example, You burnt 1000 calories by working out and after that, you ate a pizza containing 1000 calories. Now your calories are equalised and there is no chance to lose weight.

2) Junk food contains refined
carbohydrates which make you hungry frequently.

Conclusion/Fact- while losing weight we should follow a proper diet instead of consuming junk food.

Myth #3: Humans are evolved from apes.

Mythbusters

It is believed that apes are our ancestors and humans are evolved from apes but the truth is completely different according to biologist both apes and humans are evolved from a common ancestor hence have some similarities. To know more you can check here.

Conclusion/fact- Both humans and apes are evolved from a common ancestor.

Myth #4: we do not use more than 10 % of our brain.

Mythbusters

It is the most common and widely believed myth that humans do no use more than 10% of their brain. People relate this with many brilliant scientists like Albert Einstein, But the fact is that there is not a single part in the brain which is not functional. For more information regarding this, you can check here.

Conclusion/fact - Each part of our brain is active and specialised to do specific tasks.

Myth #5: cold weather makes you sick.

It is believed that if you are exposed to cold temperatures you may fall sick but it is not true, the common cold is caused by rhinoviruses and low temperature is favourable for their growth hence most of the people fall sick during winters.

Conclusion/fact:- cold weather does not make a person sick instead it gives suitable condition to microorganisms which can make a person sick.
