THE WAY AHEAD...
Since it has a strong scientific approach, having a background in science is useful. So if you are in lower classes and wanted to make a career in psychology, I will suggest you choose science stream.
In rare cases, institutes admit students who are not from a science background. In order to do well, students should have knowledge of subjects such as biology, mathematics and statistics.
HOW TO PREPARE...
Similar to medicine and law, a degree in psychology can make take four to seven years of study. One typically needs an undergraduate degree from an accredited institute, a master's degree followed by a doctoral programme and some work experience in the field.
Psychology students can choose to specialise in a range of chosen areas within the field. Students can also customise the curriculum and opt for specialisation as per their interest by the end of the third year of their undergraduate programme.
DRIVEN BY RESEARCH...
One of the most important aspects of a psychology degree is the method of research. The key is how one designs the questionnaire, formulate an experiment and does investigations-using mathematical and statistical measurements along with a qualitative perspective by talking to and interviewing people. Statistics and research methods are key tools of the trade that allow students to understand human behaviour in a better way.
HANDS-ON TRAINING...
The study of psychology is not only focused on theory but also on letting students conduct experiments and investigations. So, both the theory and experiments have to go hand in hand. For psychology to become an effective tool of employment, students need to realise the relevance of the subject in their own life during the learning process. They are usually in a way that enhances their capability to use psychology in professional, personal and social domains. They are also encouraged to take up an internship to understand individual differences and group behaviour.
SKILLING GOALS...
Analytical skill is a primary requirement besides empathy and knowledge to understand people and their behaviour. Students should also develop numerical skills to excel.
